How long do shifter bushings last

postby john90 » 10/24/13 @ 09:42

I know, stupid question. But I just had my shifter go limp on me on the way home today, so I pulled it apart and the bushing had pretty much disintegrated. I was just wondering how long they last because I'm really starting to question the POs maintenance on this car.

Hell the damn water pump took a shit on me 2 months after I had it and from what I've been seeing it was on borrowed time when I bought the thing. Gotta love craigslist :suicide:

Miata? I bet they were never replaced. Most miata's reaching the 100k range I would expect wear parts to begin to fail. Like clutch, bushings, soft tops, suspension bits etc...

Yeah I'm going to do the whole rebuild, was just wondering. Mine has 212,000 on it so I hope they were replaced at least once

lol will do, thanks. The guy I got it from claimed that the engine/trans in the car was lower mileage than the chassis by 75,000 miles or so, but I just assume it's bullshit and the drivetrain is at 212,000 too. Drives great and was at a decent price so fuck it, works for me

Prolly depends on type/quality of oil used in the turret as well as the driving style and abuse it was put through. Eventually they will fail no matter how gentle you are. Heat + plastic + many years = significant loss of durability.

I'm pretty demanding of any equipment I use, cars included. I've never really been one to drive slow or easy, so I probably just accelerated the process. Either way, was just wondering. Thanks guys, and thanks for not giving me shit for such a noob question. I still consider myself somewhat new to the Miatas, this one hasn't given me that much experience in fixing things in the last year

Just a note, avoid the metal ones, they start shaving themselves, leaving metal shavings in your trans fluid.

I've been happy with the miataroadster delrin ones. I also recall NA/NB having different ones that aren't interchangeable, but it could be 5spd vs 6spd.

Good to know. I keep seeing the metal ones around, but after looking in the turret it looked like there is a lot of movement on that part. Hmm might have to look into the delrin one

I had the aluminum mazdaspeed one, it didn't fit my msm 6spd, so I gave it to a local guy with a 5 spd NA. It fit, and worked, but he discovered it was shaving itself and leaving shavings behind. Guy decided to just replace with oem, and flush the fluid.

Damn that's kind of messed up. I'd be pissed if I had bought one only to have to clean up shavings every time I changed the fluid. Well it'll be a little while before I can do any ordering, so on to driving the F150 for the time being :tits:

I gave it to him for free because it just straight up didn't fit on my 6 spd.

I've changed mine once not too long after I got the car with another oem bushing. It's worked fine for the last five years and probably a good 50k miles. And they're only like $6-7.

When I pulled it apart pretty much everything crumbled, so I just had to suck it up and order a rebuild kit, can't wait for it to be on the road again! And another thing off of the to-do list.

Hmm, I have the Beatrush collar. It feels fine to me, maybe I will check the turret fluid.

Hmm weird. First time I replaced the shifter bushing with my dad it only lasted 13,000 miles (4 years).

So far the current plastic one has lasted ok. Old one just broke one day in the middle of a shift.

Just got it bolted up and it's driving better than the day I brought it home. I can't believe how shitty it was in comparison to meow, kind of embarrassing I let it get that bad. With any luck this one will last a while, if not I'm going to try that delrin one mentioned above

Back from the dead. Looks like I just broke the bushing I put in there, didn't think I was shifting THAT hard, attempt 2 is in the mail. :suicide:
I think I'm slowly getting over wanting this thing, might go back to my V8 cars soon I think

V8 cars have bushings in their shifters too

Yeah I thought it was a a bit short lived too, hadn't gone completely to mush yet but was lessened up like it did before it went the last time. To be honest if I get into another car it'll most likely be an automatic anyway, shifting doesn't always agree with some ongoing injuries.
I know it isn't the best option, but I got my hands on an aluminum one for pretty much free that I'm going to try.

I got a short shift kit from miataroadster. It feels like the bushing is a little bit too small, and that makes it vibrate some while driving. Or it could all be in my head.

Old one was toast after 60k miles.
