Should I or shouldn't I?

postby RevolverRob » 05/16/14 @ 00:37

My dad has a 1963 Sunbeam Alpine (street car). We've both been way into vintage auto racing and really would love to do a car to get into the Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca. This car, after the restoration, would qualify. It's got vintage club-racing history, log books, and photos to show it running. Plus, we already have a cross section of parts in the garage to work on this thing.

Reasons to do it:

It's cheap
Have a bunch of parts already from my dad's car
Have know how for working on this platform
It's cooler than a fucking Miata (sorry dudes, this is super fucking true)
It's British
Has racing provenance to allow it to compete in even the snobbiest vintage racing leagues

Reasons not to do it:

It'll take 5-7 years to build and cost 10-12k
Car is rough and will need full resto
I'd have to get my competition license to drive it
No matter how much I build it, this car will always be a slow ass car
It's British
It would take away from the other project car I have, that I want to complete that is my current priority (1963 Mercury Comet)
I would have to buy a truck and trailer
___

I'm really leaning towards no, but the price is so cheap...it's making it really tempting.

So what say ye, losers of ClubPhillyB?

We are all going to say yes, it isn't our wallet footing the bill.
1990 Miata, SNC 1.6, DIY Randall, R-Package Lip, Overnight parts from Japan.
1979 XS650, far from stock.
1995 Sportster, 'merica. Wrecked.
2007 Sportster, 'merica 2.0.

Come on man, I was hoping SOMEONE would prevail with logic. :suicide:

My main reason to NOT do it - Is because I am moving to Chicago for five years and my parents are in Dallas, about 1000 miles away and that's where the car will be. So I KNOW it won't get done fast and I KNOW I don't have time to work on it right away. I have to be honest, I've never really been into Sunbeams, my dad on the other hand. If I were going to buy into a little British roadster the one for me would be a 59-61 Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite H-Production car. But those are more expensive to buy into (but cheaper to maintain).

That said, I'm tempted to buy it and give my dad cash to work on it every month, a hundred or two at a time. meow that he is retired, I was thinking it might be something for him to do with my nephews (4 and 2) over the next few years that would be fun for him. Since it's the same as his street car, parts should interchange if he needs something for either car it will work. My folks are on a fixed income and don't have cash to spare working on cars, so this would be a way to give my dad the money to work on it.

I don't know, I'm going to talk it over with my dad and see what he thinks. Damn thing is so cheap though...

Only Brits call them Frogeyes.

It's become a moot point, car has been pulled from auction. My guess is someone made him a cash offer he couldn't refuse, it wasn't me.

Oh well, the cash can go into the back or into a mutual fund where maybe I can get it earning some interest and making me more money for my '63 Comet.

Then I guess we are right since we built it, sort of like the pronunciation of Jaguar.

Just google image ''frogeye'' and ''bugeye''

The number of times Brits had turned out to be right even after building something is so few, that they can be counted on one hand. This isn't one of them.

Bugeye and Frogeye -

Google Bugeye you get - Bugeye WRXs, Bugeye Sprites, and Bugeye Sailboats

Google Frogeye you get - Bugeye Sprites, headphones, and male genitalia

One results in the acquisition of CARS and BOATS, the other results in the acquistion of CARS and COCK.

You're right Frogeye is the correct version, because Brits enjoy cock with their cars. :suicide:

Looking off of percentages frogeye is still the correct term in dealing with the car. Deal with it.

Also if you dont like cock youre a phaggot. Truth. Fucking females is for poofs.

Also also. Why right your name after everything when it we know who is writing it by either looking A. right, or B. up to the the time and date?

Like I said, I've only heard one kind of person call them ''bugeye'' and they were all simple. :thilly:

Dude ended the auction early and has not relisted the car. After some thought, I think I dodged a bullet.
