My diary - Watch me print shit in 3D.

postby Teejay187 » 09/07/14 @ 12:20

Here is an opportunity to see what I spend most afternoons doing.

I am printing stuff on a 3D-printer on my free time to get a little extra cash on hand. The cash then goes to car parts :phillyb™:

Earlier this week I printed a new extruder. The extruder is the part that pushes plastic into the hotend. Having a good extruder and a clean hotend is the key to consistent good quality prints.

After doing some prints last night, I managed to reset the printer and then my worst fear came true. The printer started crushing my print against the extruder and two carriers broke.

This means that the printer is useless since the carriers holds everything together. I managed to glue and ziptie everything together, and after being in clamps for the whole night it is ready to reproduce!

meow I have a few hours of printing left before I can start assemble the new stuff. I hope it works out so I can finish my orders.

I printed the replacement parts with the damaged printer. After the last print it collapsed, I shit you not. Took me about 5 hours to replace everything.

@Jeff_Lebre I use Google Sketchup.

I have no idea. It's super easy and very limited. Plug ins makes it work OK I guess.

We need to get better at printing with ABS, it always seems to want to fight us. PLA works well for most of our projects though. That printer is ridiculously big.

ABS can be tricky. Do you have issues with lifting/warping?

also, what is the build size on that?

Yup the lifting a warping is the big problem.

It is big, 24x24x24. carbon sounds fun.

Enclose printer, put kapton tape on the bed, wash it with acetone, and set the temp to 110 degrees C on the bed.

That should not lift haha..

The room is enclosed, we can crank the heater up. What temp would you recommend it be?

Max temp on the bed is 106, we will run it up on that and give it a shot.

That should do it. Also try to disable the optional cooling fan if you have one. I print ABS at 250-270. Prints stick so well to the bed that I have to shock them loose with a hammer :kitty:

I am going to thread-jack you TJ and post what I have been up to with my printer.

We have a truck in the shop, it is a Canadian Forest Truck. Titled as a 66, but made up from the factory of components ranging from 62-66.

We could not/can not get the horn ring retention plate. All the sell is the smaller ones for passenger cars and light trucks. I TinkerCAD'd this up and it was a overwhelming success!

Printing :

Normal sized one, compared to the normal (wrong) sized one to make sure my model was close enough (it was!)

Printing the scaled up version (24% larger)

Been using the extra days off to improve my printer. Haven't even started working on the bigger one yet. I lack motivation.

However. This is what I have done the last few days. Z-axis braces, Z-endstop modification, Y-axis bearing support, bed leveling mods, X and Y belt tightening, filament feeder.

Tinkercad is very frustrating actually. As a old-school CAD user - I find the lack of things like radial arrays and detailed snap settings to be annoying. Maybe one day I will learn something better.

The ol' PrintrBot JRv2 does a great job considering what I have in it, and how little I do maintenance wise to it.
