Ipad and other Apple questions. Help me nerds!
I really want to get the wifey an Ipad. Best Buy has the Ipad 4 (16G Wifi) listed at $449 with a $75 gift card.
We DO NOT need cellular service.
We DO need a way to expand the memory or back up the Ipad on an external storage device.
This WILL be used for business purposes and Itunes for the majority of the time.
I have an Iphone 4S. She uses an Iphone 4. Can either be tethered to the Ipad? (we have unlimited data plans through Verizon.)
Tell me what to get!
Mini?
Ipad2?
Airport?
Apple TV?
Ipad Air?
I'm hoping to get a Macmini for myself after Christmas, but the lady comes first.
Ready..... GO!

Nerds don't really own iphones and ipads................
lol jk...kinda
Anyway, my old roomate had apple tv and it was awesome. Get that.
The ipad is good as a toy but not much else. My mom has an ipad3 and she reads her emails and plays games on it. If you want an expensive toy, get it. If you want something functional, buy a chromebook (oh no!!!!! a wild google product appears)

chromebook is right up my alley. (as long as it has a cd reader)
She has a macbook at the moment. Works great, but beginning to slow down. believe it's from 2006 or so....
She would use the ipad for calendar / scheduling / billing / email / accounts receivable

Re: Ipad and other Apple questions. Help me nerds!
What you need help with ...
I can help out... Yes your the iPad can be set up to receive texts and things like that on wifi .. It would go to the phone and iPad an you can reply with either
iPads are nice.. Not trying to speak for apple but if you get it you should make sure you can get the apple care + plan.. It covers physical damage and water damage... A replacement device is given for $50 if you break it .. Ac+ is $99 out the door... You only have 30 days from the original date of purchase to call apple and get it set up after that it's just apple protection plan
That does not cover any physical or water damage but does cover hardware issues for 2 years Ac+ has this part to
I don't have any protection plan.. I was broke when I got my shit so ya if you can swing it do so
Especially if you got kids
Apple TV.. Have it it's dope you can do a lot with it... To much to explain but for $99 it awesome
Let me know if you got anymore questions

Apple Care is awesome no doubt. We will get a plan to protect it. Can I use her Iphone 4 or my 4s tethered to the Ipad? Also, need to figure out how large to go.... is 16GB a waste of time?

Re: Ipad and other Apple questions. Help me nerds!
At my house I manage both the extreme and express. The extreme gives wireless internet for the house. The express acts as a repeater to make the signal go throughout the house. The express is also used as a wireless Ethernet port to give wireless to our vonage box.
We use an extreme as well at my dads office. I am also in charge of that and all it related things.

Re: Ipad and other Apple questions. Help me nerds!
Apple is some greedy mothers, yes you can set up a iPhone to tether but it's 20 a month. The iPad has a tethering option that uses your data, only because they don't make a unlimited data plan for it. There where a few people that made tethering apps that used your unlimited data (apple destroyed the apps and threw the peoples in jail who made them) it was some fucked yo shitttt. I've been considering getting a galaxy s4 just because Android has a free tethering app that uses your data and verizon doesn't penalize you for using it. Yet they where in some cohoots with Apple and had apple integrate tethering that you had to add it to your monthly plan,,,,,,, /rantHighschool wrote:I really want to get the wifey an Ipad. Re: Ipad and other Apple questions. Help me nerds!
With the tethering do you mean text message from the iPad itself?...if so yes you can and it's free
You just need wifi to send any message and it has to be an iMessage
Edit: in reference to the 16 fb comment.. Depends what your using for..if its just work 16 is plenty...if it's more personal and you want movies and music and a shit ton of apps get a 32... I have a 32 original iPad and I don't use all the memory on it ..mine is used for Internet and movies mainly

Ok. So, you work for apple, but you don't know what tethering is? You can't answer anymore questions. I have refused to sign a new contract over the last couple years. My wife and I still have unlimited everything including data through Verizon. The tablet should be used for business only, so I shouldn't need to worry about her filling the memory with movies.... music at most. Sounds like we should KISS.... 16GB most likely.

tethering is using your devices data to create a wireless hot spot

Everyone calls it something different.. Just like miata..or mx5 but ok bad example.. I never use it... You can use your phone to "tether" and use your iPad on the Internet..lots of people do it instead of buying the cellular data plan...basically the same thing

When I first moved out west, I used my phone to tether everything, desktop, ps3 etc. At some point atnt sent me warning notice to stop or add tethering. I ignored it, kept tethering, just no more using torrents. Never got caught again. I say take your chances with the tethering.

Throttling isn't so bad here, back in NYC, hit 2gb, get 2g speeds till next cycle. Here they gimme 3g when I hit 5gb.

What is data cap? I use Sprint and average probably 2-3gb of data a month cause I do a lot of streaming while on the train.

Ended up with apple tv in my pocket for $85. It's rad.
Chromecast is still awesome. For $35, it's rad too.
Picked up two HDMI cables at $15 a piece. Insignia, but cheap works for me.
