1911s are the end all and be all of handguns. They've been trying, unsuccessfully, for over 100 years to make a better pistol and haven't succeeded yet.

For their size, they are great CCW guns. They print a lot less than any of my double stacks. Sure I only get 8 rounds, but thats what extra mags are of.

I have a 1942 stamped Husqvarna made Type II M38 Swedish Mauser I bought for $50 from a friend who did an estate clean out. It's a fun gun to shoot in it's simplicity, and the 6.5x55mm ammo packs a punch. I thought about using it for deer one season but my Browning Lever Rifle is just too nice.

Would you guy's say a 1911 is a good first gun? I've always wanted one but I always spend money on carparts then guns.

What/where should I look for in purchasing one? My cousin was telling me to look at Kimber?

In my opinion kimber is a little over priced. If you're going to spend that much i'd say buy sig or colt. To me kimber is just a look pretty 1911.

1911 IMO, is more of a hobbyist toy. Don't get me wrong, it's solid metal, and the design hasn't changed much in over a century because it's a good reliable design. But if we're talking about CCW, self/home defense. I think one of the modern plastic/metal hybrid guns are a better choice. They're lighter, more concealable, hold more rounds, and way cheaper.

Kimber makes a nice firearm, and they are well built.

IMO if you are new to shooting you do NOT want a compact pistol as it will be harder to learn to use and get comfortable with. A decent 1911 would make a great first/learning firearm.

You may want to consider a Magnum Research "Desert Eagle 1911" as they run between 700-900 bucks and when compared to my Kimber the DE1911 is a tighter, better fitted, and immensely greater value. Honestly the quality of the DE1911 I have is better than quite a few 2k+ dollar 1911s I have fired. IMO the Desert Eagle 1911s are the best kept secret in the 1911 world.

@Mazduh did you want a piece for conceal carry? Or is it mostly gonna be range and possible home protection? If the latter, IMO the money is better spent on an AR/AK based rifle.

No need for home defense or carry. Just something to shoot on weekend etc. Don't really want/need a rifle. Pistols seem so much cooler plus I don't think I'll want to modify them. If I got a rifle It would be one more thing to mod/upgrade. LOL

Well, most of my gun friends are/were military, and military guys seem to universally think pistols are useless. They've pushed me towards the AR platform. One of my military friends, a former 10th mountain ranger, says the Beretta is issued so you can shoot yourself in the head either because your balls got blown off, or to avoid becoming a POW.

Before buying anything I tried out a few polymer pistols, a smg, and a shotgun. Gotta admit, a rifle is just way more accurate at way farther. Not to mention the recoil is like powder staple guns.

The m&p line is indeed a good choice, especially considering s&w warranty. But if I were going to pickup a budget AR, this would be the one, best deal available right meow IMO. In fact, I pushed my sis to pick it up and leave it with me, until she moves here.

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/prod ... +SA+2235.5

Colt the gold standard for rock bottom price. Floating barrel out the box, that's usually a $200-300 mod! Some will cry of missing dust cover and forward assist (m&p 15 sport, the budget AR doesn't have them either). Not an issue IMO, the dust cover is open while you're firing anyway, and lets be honest, our guns are usually stored indoors. The forward assist, you can do the thing by sticking your thumb in the ejection port and forcing the bolt forward. I think the military needs it because they can fire auto and burst, which could make the bolt too hot to force with your bare finger.

Before you listed the bottom of the barrel stuff, meow you're listing the uber high end stuff? LOL

Personally, I'd go for something med grade ($800-$1000) so you have some money left for mods and ammo. A rifle with no ammo is :( and any half ass decent scope will shoot tighter than iron sights. Not to mention most of those high end AR's tend to be OR versions that don't come with sights or BUIS. If you search enough, you can find mil-spec AR in the $700-1000 range, and have enough left over for an aimpoint/eotech, extra mags, and ammo.
