So, the paint was flying of the car at record rate. Who needs paint anyway?

image
image

Paint aside, I found the previous owner failed to mention that moisture had gotten in the passenger side floor area. Deleted the torn soft top after picking up a hardtop in the Bronx. Removed the carpet after seeing the floor pan at the same time.

image
image

Rebuilt the shifter boots...
image

Started stripping the paint...
image

Found some cancer / bondo...
image
image
image

Hit up Good-Win-Racing for some mounts to fit my Sparco sliders.
image

Went to a sweet Iron Pigs game... or two with phillyb™. Golf cart mirror was a great drunken' purchase.
image

Then Alex helped me get some bulk Plastidip. Not my cars, but the IMAX KOP meets are decent.
image
image
image

Wedding was pressing, so I did the only rational thing. 48hrs straight without an hour or two of sleep. Stripped, bondo'd, and plastidip fun. Then I drove down to WV for the big day...
image
image

She said YES thank god.

Plenty more to come. Thanks for trolling.

That plastidip seems to have come out pretty nicely, is it just over a primer?

I decided not to primer the car. After testing the dip on a few different surfaces, I found it adheres to lightly scuffed metal surfaces best. May not have come out as 'clean', but looks phantastic in my opinion. I sprayed it with a newly designed Wagner HPLV interior / exterior spray gun. Only used two gallons, and have one to spare.

Plastidip is rad stuff.

@highschool if you need any random interior pieces I have some laying around.

Also, that dip looks absolutely phantastic. Did you buy the dipyourcar kit? Also, are you not afraid of the car getting cancer from the metal being exposed? Plasti-dip covers it up but plastidip also doesn't last long. I would be skeered, myself.

Great points.

I got in contact with Inspired Performance via Alex (MX5millitia or something). His car is the black one towards the begining of the thread on gray TRmotorsport wheels.

The dip is awesome stuff. 2 gallons covered the car fairly well. I have one left for touch up and respray in areas of concern once the snow melts away.

I did not primer the car prior to shooting the dip. Wanted to see how it held up after a few months of abuse before I decide to paint the car or add layers of dip. I picked up a HPLV gun at home depot for about $150 and it worked great.

To be honest, I drive ugly cars. I've had a few broken into over the years, and learned to keep builds functional rather than pretty. Plastidip can last a very long time if it is applied heavily (5+ coats).

The longest process was stripping and prepping the exterior. I used chemical stipper to remove what I could while staying away from trim pieces. Next, I just hit the whole car with a stipping wheel and took the paint and primer down to metal.

Here's the best part.

It happened to be 75+ degrees just before the wedding in October, so I shot the car in my driveway in about 35-40 minutes. The tape work was the most time consuming, and that was prob an hour or so including removal of lenses.

Traditional paint is beautiful no doubt, but my broke ass didn't want to build a pretty car. :unicorn:
