the Meandering Marmot.

postby theAngryMarmot » 10/16/13 @ 11:40

So I bought this, because I felt sorry for it - and I got it el' cheap.

Miata # 9!

A bit of a disclaimer :
This is not a build that will feature bad-ass parts, nor will this car ever be anything "nice." This car was bought to provide nothing but fun behind the wheel. If it doesn't make it more fun to drive - I probably won't buy one/have one/install one. I know some people will scoff, talk shit, or make fun - but I don't care. It makes me smile when I drive it - and that is all I care about.

93 C-Package with 133k on it. It looks ok due to the crappy cell pics - but it has the worst repaint to ever be applied.

I drove it to work, and then the dash cracked when I traversed a slightly taller than average caterpillar.

So then I did this :

image
Untitled by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
Untitled by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
Untitled by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

Driving around with no dash is fun. Stripped out the car was hilarious.

Anyways, to make a long story somewhat shorter - and mainly because I deleted the photos in a fit of rage I will just type what happened next.

I spend a great many hours repairing my stock dash. EPA illegal quantities of epoxy were used. I installed repaired dash. Dash broke again, which caused me to bash it repeatedly with hammers.

image

Cursing the Gods for wasting my time.

So, I then acquired another hood, two fenders, hood, and a nose-cone off craigslist for 75 bucks. The dude who sold them was putting one of those horrible Z3 look alike body kits on his Miata.

image
DSC_0134 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

I started to polish the hood, since I had a spare. Why not.

image
IMAG0009 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

I then bought a :

image
164229_10151372317313741_166058317_n by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

And since they are local, some of these :

image
1704_10151368842018741_1186617128_n by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

And those resulted in this :

image
559144_10151372720303741_1750198518_n by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

Then like any good ricer, I bought some fake wheels :

image
DSC_0159 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
DSC_0154 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

This resulted in an agreeable look.

At some point around this time, I started to try to make the paint somewhat shiny. This resulted in me wiping the entire car down with Xylene - then buffing it to the point normal paint would be destroyed. It got a slight bit shinier.

I then discovered my warehouse was a great photo location for my limited skills :

image
DSC_0169 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
DSC_0200 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

Because they are local, I bought a fun-lever and bias controller.

image
IMAG0067 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
DSC_0219 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
DSC_0220 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

It should also be mentioned, that I am not on the stock LSD either. The car has a 1.8 subframe/LSD in it.

I bought some tow hooks. This car will see track time, as all my previous has.

image
IMAG0080 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

I also bought the factory shifter rebuild parts, a short shifter, and voodoo k-nob.

image
IMAG0082 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

Went to a local car meet. Got gang-banged by FRS/BRZs

image
IMAG0103 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

Found a later model dash locally, bought a Momo wheel from SafeRacer (never again!,) etc.
image
DSC_0292 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
DSC_0302 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

Bought some frame rails locally. Had immense fun drilling large holes in my car.

image
IMAG0202 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

meow I slide over bumps like a penguin on a glacier.

image
IMAG0196 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

Cat still was not impressed.

I then had to come up with some sort of exhaust. I had been running mostly open header - to the joy of everyone near me. Some Peruvian mangled up the exhaust before I got the car, so it took considerable hillbilly possum engineering to get it all working.

image
IMAG0303 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

This, by pure unadultered happenstance was right around the time emissions was required. So it passed and was quite the hit at the testing station :

image
IMAG0302 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

I then returned to work, amongst the giants :

image
IMAG0296 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
IMG_0141 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

I then got annoyed at the little shiny flex lines on my e-brake, so I made the best hard lines that cheap tools can make :

image
IMG_0145 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

I also finally mounted the airbag cover on the dash, and made it removable for secret-squirrel level hiding spot.

image
IMG_0146 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

Then someone hit me :

image
IMAG0311 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
IMAG0317 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

The damage :

image
Untitled by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

I queued the music, and taught my wife to weld :

image
IMG_0151 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

The dude who hit me, his insurance (MapFre) sucks and was taking a long, long time.

This became a major issue when this came in :

image
IMAG0323 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

What is the point of having a badass custom plate, when you have not the vehicle to install it on.

So I once again queued the music - and fixed that shit myself. Amazing what happens when I remember I worked in a classic car resto shop for many a year.

Before :

image
IMAG0324 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
IMAG0325 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
IMAG0326 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

Hillbilly solution :

image
IMAG0327 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
IMAG0328 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

Then there was much, much hammer/dollying and cursing, bending, flexing, etc.

And then I noticed this happened :

image
IMAG0329 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
IMAG0330 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

It had worked.

So then this :

image
IMAG0332 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
IMAG0334 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
IMAG0336 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

Fuck people who don't pay attention when driving, fuck insurance companies that take forever (still waiting, btw...)

Car was back on the road.

Then I bought these from someone local. Way too bling for my car, but after it's ass raping by the F250 I felt it needed something nice.

image
IMG_0157 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

I then made a center stack cover, and drew a Marmot on it.

image
IMAG0348 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

I will eventually do the door cards to match.

So there was the last six months , we are up to date. I didn't take pics of things like me de-powering the brake, deleting the non-working ABS, etc. The engine/bay is still 100% stock for meow.

I mounted a headunit in my glove box so that way it is out of sight. It has blue tooth streaming so that way I never have to even look at it. Just automatically recognizes my phone and I use the phone to control volume and whatnot. This required something to hold my cell phone, so I made a spring loaded cell phone holder (black thing attached to the tombstone.)

I want something to cover and clean up the rear "package tray" area. I seen a company that makes a sheet metal kit - and it is really nice - but I am not paying 450 bucks for some sheets of aluminum with some holes in it.

It is cut the way it is near the seats because I have yet to decide if it will go "level" with the harness bar (about 2" above so I have harness clearance) or if I decide to keep it the way it is I will make it straight along that edge.

I started making my templates this afternoon :

image
DSC00039 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

image
DSC00038 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

I have to make the template for the vertical strip that runs along the back of the "tray" but I think this will be easy to make and be a lot cheaper - and accomplish pretty much the same task

First bunch of new parts came in :

IMAG0362 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

GarageStar Cam Bolts, Cooling Panel, Lightweight pulleys, Delrin diff bushings on B.O.
Corksport lightweight crank pulley, adj. Cam Gears, Mazdaspeed Motor Mounts.
Cometic headgasket and top end gasket set.
Mishimoto silicone rad hoses.
Raceland header (I know....I know..... but I was happy with the one on my NB.)
DIYAutotune megasquirt and AFM delete kit.
Gates performance timing belt and new OE tensioners.
ARP Headstuds.

I am going to pick up this weekend new CAS seal, crank seal, oil pan gasket.

Next week the Flyin' Miata happy meal with the lighter weight flywheel (7lb) should be in, as well as a complete energy suspension bushing kit. I pick up my other 1.6 at the machine shop on Tuesday.

Yes, but that's just the stigma attached to the name because of their shit coilovers. The header is supposed to be not bad at all.

Also, this thread is awesome!

I didn't like running the wires for the adapter board under the PCB like in the instructions, so I re-did it on top with much nicer wiring.

Once that was done, and I was happy - Had to Marmotize it :

Then after uploading the basemap, much cursing, it runs and seem much, much more responsive. I still have some work to do with the return to idle settings as it wants to die - but I am very happy with everything else so far :
