Considering most intakes (stock and aftermarket) for the 1.6 Miatas suck air from the hot side of the engine (right above the header) I am sure this is a nice difference.

According to my IAT sensor the intake air is something like 80 degrees cooler there, then it was in the "stock" location.

In other news,

Rattiest, yet most modded car at the show lol.

Open header FTW!

But you are right. The megasquirt + SS Header + short intake = Sounds just like a rotary, the first time I drove it open header after the header install I was amazed at how much it sounded like my old '89 GTUS with HKS exhaust lol. The best part is if I have it dump an asston of fuel on idle, it "braaapbraappppbrapppps" like a ported 13b lol.

It is quiet meow though, like prius quiet. Under hard accel, the intake is hilariously loud though.

Just completed doing a headgasket, cam seals, CAS o-ring, and reinstalled my COPs.

The car has 135k on it, but when I yanked the head the pistons were really clean. Had the tell-tale sign of recent rebuild. I would estimate less than 75k on it. Could be a good thing, or a bad thing.

Hrmm. Those look a lot cleaner than they should for a car having over 130K miles on it....

Given the RTV and other non-factory sealants I found - this engine was gone through at some point. Could be a good thing, or a horrible thing. Time will tell. A few of the coolant passages were completely blocked with sealant.

image

New Cam seals, they were leaking.

image

CAS O-Ring had given up. It was like plastic.

image

Head cleaned up and back on.

image

Coil on plug conversion reinstalled. But the big issue is how to hold the coils down.

image

A solution presented itself in the form of one of my stainless steel rulers. Macguyver that crap on.

To celebrate a drive me and a few friends are making this caturday (Phoenix to Prescott,) I decided to do a special hood. It will be the furthest I have driven the car to date (90 miles.)

So my extra hood I semi-polished and have started the Mural.

Skulls are nearly done, not I just have to start adding the horde of weapon wielding Marmots!

Re: the Meandering Marmot.

The story behind the Marmots is :

A long, long time ago
In a land far, far away
Where the hillbilly and the rednecks came out to play
There was but one boy who dared to stray
From all the Camaros, Mustangs, Fords and Chevrolets

Every caturday Night at I57 DragWay
Paul (me) would bring his Honda CRX out to say
Even 4 bangers are A-OK

It was a sweet machine, one of a few
in the land of moonshine, trees, and Ol' Boy Blue
Twas running a high compression B16, built true and true
It was loving hand assembled by you know who

It was in a time, before Fast and Furious had been let loose
So the imports, euros, and domestics were in peaceful truce..............

I had a angry CRX back in the mid-late 90s. I used to run it all the time at a local 1/8th mile drag strip. The hillbillies and rednecks would often want to ride along as it was something new and cool to them.

One night, my friends and I were all at the strip and some great big, huge fat redneck came up and said :

"Hey meow there boy - you think you can give muh a ride in that there thing?"

I said :

"Sure, lets go."

So lined up, did the burnout. His reaction to 8k+ RPM shifts and the amount of racket the car produced was hilarious.

When we got back to where I was parked he fell out of the CRX, stood up and pointed his finger in a very accusingly fashion and proclaimed:

"That there is one sum-a-bitchin' fast little fooking marmot of a car!"

and wandered off telling all his buddies about the car.

The car was then known as the "Angry Marmot" to me, my friends, and all the rednecks and hillbillys.

So every since, every car I own that is odd, fast, or personable is some sort or Marmot. Eventually I wondered about Marmots, so I started reading up on them - and nowadays quite knowledgeable. They have become my favorite animal.

I have even been on a few trips to see them in the wild. I donate to http://www.marmots.org to save an endangered species (Vancouver Island Marmot.)

I used to work for some Swiss-Germans who thought they were geniuses. All the Americans of staff (me included) were treated as "dumb." phunny though, they had a great product (electric scooters) but still ran the company into the ground.

Anyways, they hired and flew in a German electronics engineer to make a new "2013" model that had digital display, electric brakes, range meters, etc. He built this giant prototype control board and display using 8 segment LEDs. It was a joke. Dude was nice and all - but what he built looked like something from a 1970s horror movie about a giant killer calculator.

On my free time, I built their prototype - unknown to them. Built it from my parts, my time, etc. I used so heavy duty servos, an Arduino, and a nice touchscreen display.

When I got it about 80% operational (the brakes, display, range meter, speedometer, trip counters, etc all worked) I wheeled it in the shop. The inventor of the product was particularly impressed by how I made the brakes adjustable. The inventor was a cool guy (also Swiss-German) and he didn't share the same outlook on us Americans. Eventually they ousted him from the company.

Everyone was all clamoring around it. The president of the company walks up and says "Can Vwe have this?"

I said, "No, this is all my time, parts, etc. You need to give me that R&D position you promised me a year ago - and then I will allow this to be integrated into the company."

Needless to say they were a bit pissed a "dumb American" had one-upped them, and their "superior" German engineer on building the prototype. They told me to take it back home, not to bring it back.

They didn't speak to me for months. So just to further prove how stupid they were - I printed up a fake "Marmot Wrangler" certificate. This thing looked official. Had a gold seal, state of Arizona seal watermarked, and in a nice frame.

They thought it was real. My co-workers and I knew that it obviously was not - because there was no such thing as a state recognized "Marmot Wrangler."

I hung it on my work area, with my ASE Master Tech certs, and some computer certs I have.

These silly Swiss-Germans would parade investors through all the time. They would get to my work area, introduce me, and then point out all my certifications - including the Marmot Wrangler.

Most foreign investors didn't pick up on the joke - but in what would turn out to be our biggest investors did.

They were from Utah, and they knew what a Marmot was. The whole time the president of the company was showing them my certs, the investor was looking at me phunny. I just winked. He had a chuckle and then proceeded to tell the president how amazing of a honor it was to be a Marmot Wrangler. The guys and I had to chew our cheeks to keep from rolling on the floor laughing.

So over the years, my friends and I have just sort of integrated Marmots into conversation, cars, etc. Kind of like this place and Cats. My friend Mike can't say 10 sentences without mentioning a Whistlepig (another name for a kind of Marmot) somewhere in there and having a laugh.

Anyways, that is some of the story. Nothing too exciting, scandalous, or phunny - but that is where it comes from.

There is about to be some MASSIVE updates.

Like a Moron, I thought I would register the Marmo-Miatar for JCCS.

So, here is the list of all that will be happening in the next month :

Engine is out.
Mazdaspeed Spec-Miata engine is going in.
Transmission is getting new input/output shaft seals. Entire case will be degreased and painted.
PPF will be stripped and painted.
Rear diff / axles / etc will be stripped, painted, and polished were applicable.
V8 Roadster frame rails will be refinished.
Roll bar will be refinished.
Trunk lid will be repaired.
New front lip will be installed.
Passenger side mirror mounting holes will be filled.
Engine bay is getting smoothed. Hard.
Brake booster is getting deleted.
New master cylinder is going in.
New clutch master is going in.
Brake line tuck is going to happen, everything will be routed alone the firewall inside the cabin of the car and hidden by the dash.
I am making/modifying the factory harness to be tucked.
I am welding up all the holes in the firewall and engine bay.
I am stripping the bay and refinishing.
The interior sound deadening spray will be finished, then new carpet is going in.
Some sort of nice door panels are going in.
The valve cover will be refinished into something just for JCCS.
More marmots will be added to the hood.
My "new" subframes that have poly bushings and zerk fittings will be going in.
New crossdrilled / slotted Powerstop rotors are going on.
All dings/dents are being filled - and the car will be plasti-dipped Anthracite Grey Metallic.
Fixed back racing seat will be installed along with the harness I have had forever.
Koyo Radiator will be polished.
AN fuel lines will be ran.
Polished Catch Can will be installed.
Fuel rail and and intake manifold will be polished.
New Injectors will be installed.

That is the short list for meow.

Thursday or so there will be a massive pic dump in here.

Header will be refinished. I cleaned the Corksport Cam gears, and crank pulley. I cleaned the billet water pump pulley and alternator pulley.

New 5 point harnesses that will be going in. New H4 headlights that will be going in.

imageIMG_20140715_235312 by PaulGT2164, on Flickr

I need to clean and repolish the intake pipe and get a new philter.

Cleaned and polished the GarageStar cam gear bolts and washers.

I need to clean the GarageStar radiator cooling cover.

Got the old engine pretty much ready to be pulled. Still have to take out the radiator. Already pulled the headlight assemblies. The valve cover on the old engine will be replaced with my spare one. The Valve cover will be stripped, the area behind the cam gears will be polished. The rest of the cover will be painted in the 787B Livery.

All the wire/lines/hoses are going bye. Brake booster delete will be here tomorrow. I have new brake and clutch masters waiting. I have a stainless clutch line on order.
