Nameless Red 1990

postby Derek » 10/09/13 @ 15:35

I wanted to name it Hank, but my girlfriend told me Hank isn't an appropriate name for a Miata.

I thought it looked like a 'Hank'. Plus, what does she know, she's a woman.

102,000 miles with decent service records indicating the car was originally from Cherry Hill, NJ. Thank goodness there are no front plate holes. Had a cheap respray but there's no rust on it and it spent the last 7 years in a garage as a weekend car.

Here it is the day I brought it home, August 2012.

image

image

Note the awful over spray on the headlight surrounds. I rectified that right quick.

image

It also got all the fluids changed immediately and within the first month I owned it I replaced all the shifter bushings and seals as they were destroyed. Note the ugly spoiler, that didn't last too long, either.

image

I'll update this some more later and get caught up to where I am at meow.

Right meow I'm a year out from when I put that sticker on my car...

I enjoy a nice stereo in my cars, my old truck had two 12s behind the seat in a box I custom made to fit there in a single cab. The stock stereo was lacking...

image

So I took it upon myself to install my Pioneer deck, which had previously been in my truck. At first I tried the cheap generic plastic install kit and it was AWFUL. So I just sucked it up and bought the DDM works surround and I would do it again a million times and them some. It was so easy and fit perfectly. I replaced the door speakers and put four 3.5" Pioneer speakers in the headrests. I also fixed the botched factory speaker wiring and added a 2 ohm resistor on each channel to keep the headunit happy.

I also got another set of daisy's from a friend so I decided to plastidip my winter wheels to make them more cleaning friendly. I have mixed feelings about the black wheels, they got old towards the spring but then when I just put them back on, I liked the look again.

image

So after I had driven the Miata for a couple months I realized I hate the winter and doing it with a softtop was not something I wanted to do. Now-a-days it gets parked in a garage every night but last winter it had to brave the elements. I started looking for a hardtop and stumbled upon a factory one not far from work for $750, in the right color. Scooped that up one night after work.

image

This was the first car I have owned that was a stick, so once I got more comfortable with it, I decided it was time to work on some techniques. Instead of paying (I'm cheap) for a pedal extension, I took a piece of scrap aluminum from work and made my own. Easy rev-matching on downshifts from then on.

image

This was about the time my birthday was coming up, so I decided I was finally going to buy the R-Lip I like so much. I got an Advan-Emotion one, and for the price I am pleased with the quality and fit.

In my opinion, with a hardtop the plain stock trunk looks the best.

Yeah, right meow I had two sets of daisies. A *mint* set from my friend's dad's low mileage car that I use in the summer and then the black plasti-dipped ones for the winter tires.

I would love to spend the money on new wheels but I just got a set of Star Specs in 14" for free with enough tread to last me through next summer.

They are similar to my favorite type of wheel, Minilites, so I also like them, but I would prefer the tire options and the look of a 15 inch wheel.

I wasn't going to argue with free tires, no problem about the pictures.

They are the same exact car with different wheels, I can't see any other differences.

It need a lot of things, I'll be getting there...

Over the winter, I didn't do too much. I tried to keep the salt off of it and found out it sucks trying to order at Sonic...

image

After Christmas I got the itch to do something, so I dabbled with making my own Randall-style firewall intake. This is what I came up with, I've since updated it to try and make it more air-path friendly and look prettier. No complaints considering I put it together for about $20.

image

I also replaced the clutch slave and master cylinder at one point because the slave started failing and I found myself driving home from work with a clutch engaging just off the floor. This spring I tried changing the O2 sensor and ended up with this. I'm pretty sure it was original, and I ended up picking the threads out of the manifold as best as I could.

image

I found this extended exposure shot from just when I bought the car, and then a shot of my car and bike together.

I'm getting there.

Re: Nameless Red 1990

postby Derek » 10/10/13 @ 10:25

As it started to warm up I was looking for a cheap trunk to replace mine with the factory wing. The owner of my motorcycle shop of choice told me he had a bunch of Miata parts from a car his brother had wrecked 10 years prior. The paint is shot, it has got a few dents in it, but it was $20. I ended up giving my trunk to a local buddy who has a Red '90 with a screwed-in luggage rack and scrapping his trunk.

image

The truck, 'Cletus', in the background is my brother's old truck and my current project. Should be back on the road in a few weeks, just in time for winter. Maybe I can garage the Miata after all, if I can manage the gas with my 40 mile daily commute.

I did a foam-ectomy, removed foam from the bottom of the seat cushion and am quite pleased with the results. I have a set of S2000 seats, I got the swap started but it has just stalled and my stockers are still in there for meow as the S2000 seats sit in my garage... I need to get another set of stock sliders to motivate myself to get these done and in for good.

image

Next up was a second hand RoadsterSport 3 cat back, bought it for $200 in good shape. I had decided I wanted this exhaust already and just happen upon a used one for sale so I jumped on it. I think it sounds great and the lack of fart can hanging out the back was a requirement for me.

image

After I moved to my new house, I've been able to park in a garage every night, which led to this current mod...

image

The most recent thing I've done was get a piano black Voodoo shift knob, which I found to be a big improvement over the stock one, and add this...

image

You can see my mint daisies and my summer Azenis, which I wore down to nothing this year and ended up getting 4 nails in one rear tire one morning when I went to take the Praxis. 3 days before I had gotten a piece of metal in the other rear tire, they were both plugged but it was just time to retire them after this summer.

I'm pretty sure that's everything and up to date...

So, plans for the future?

- Buy an engagement ring.
- Get Cletus on the road.
- Continual work on the bike.

In the near future (it's overdue) I'm going to be doing a timing belt and water pump change. The weekend that happens I'm also going to be putting Mazda Comp engine mounts, a Raceland 4-2-1 header and a painted valve cover I already have ready on the car.

As far as the Miata goes, what I would eventually like to do is as phollows.

- Suspension - Either phollow Nial's guide for his good budget set-up or just do the FM 2.5 with GC sleeves instead of trying to piece one together. It depends on the money situation and what becomes available.
- Wheels - I'm a big fan of Minilites, probably going to go Panasports. If not I might go with 6ULs or TRM C1s. Budget dictates.
- Interior - Momo Prototipo, S2000 seats, Rollbar of some kind, sort out new rear speakers once the seats get changed.
- FM Frame rails
- E-Codes to replace the sealed beams
- KG Works TSIs

Once/If this car transitions to a weekend car, I'd like to do an ITB set-up, but that's dreaming in the far off future.

That scuff of white paint looks more like you took of the paint from a wall or something. If you get a nice cutting compound and a nice cutting pad it should come right off.

It was from my garage door, I got all of it off, but there is still some small damage to the car's paint there that is down to the bumper plastic. It'll just have to stay until it get a repaint.

Hopefully I can get it done before winter fully sets in, it looks like I'll have the cash this month but maybe not if I can't get the truck running properly. :suicide:

Re: Nameless Red 1990

This is how I spent this past weekend.

image

The list includes...
- Timing Belt (which I found wasn't original because I found white markings on the cam gears that would indicate the belt had been done before.)
- Water Pump
- Crank front main seal
- Accessory belts
- Thermostat
- Coolant flush
- Crank bolt and woodruff key (crank nose was in perfect shape)

It wasn't challenging, just time consuming. I had also ordered Mazdaspeed Comp engine mounts, but didn't have the energy to get them done also. I'll do them in the near future, probably when I get to buying a 4-2-1 and replacing the stock exhaust manifold.

My "build" thread is not very exciting. :whogives:

I forgot, I had bought and painted this valve cover a long time ago and never put it on the car. Since I had the VC off, I figured it was as good a time as any to swap them.

Finally an update!

I got Hella e-codes for Christmas from TheBusDepot.com. Big improvement over the stock sealed beams even with stock wiring. Plus they are an aesthetic upgrade.

I still have to get seat sliders from highschool, but it's been too cold recently to motivate me to do any work on my car that doesn't have to be done.

I was planning on trying to get some local Miata guys involved but I ended up just tearing into it spur of the moment when the weather was warmish one weekend.

There may be a suspension swap in the works for the spring, so I may have a BBQ/Come work on my car Caturday event. We'll see.

I keep forgetting to update this thing so I can keep track of stuff.

I hung out with these kids...

image

image

I put together some budget Bilstein coil overs...

image

Fought with the most stubborn paint I've ever dealt with and put some 205\50R15 Federal RS-Rs on the TRM wheels.

image

The car is getting aligned as we speak, I'll have to get some more pictures. I also got a mint soft top with frame and everything on Craigslist and bolted that into to replace my patched up original top.

Then I bought this to add to my collection.

image

I still have not bought my girlfriend any jewelry but I think I have finally gotten Cletus the S-10 running...
